Millenium Cave is a tourist cave in the central region of Espiritu Santo. Originally opened to tourism by Glenn Russell, it represents a spectacular example of a vadose passage that still contains the flowing watercourse which formed it.
After a pleasant 1 hour walk through 2 villages and the bush, a steep climb down into the gorge brings you to the 50-70m high cave entrance. Walking along the riverbed in the cave, you enter the dark zone within about 50m. The ceiling towers above at least 50m high in places, with significant possibility of other negotiable passage high above for those with climbing and SRT skills: a good project for someone in future.
Large flowstones and stalagtites adorn much of the left wall. Swift nests can be seen throughout and bats reside in some areas. Clean any cuts you receive and wash your hands frequently as several tourists have developed Leptospirosis after visiting this cave.
After over 450m of meandering passage, the cave exits and meets another river tributary. The tour continues with a walk and swim down a stunning gorge for another 1km.
